Grammar Swimming Carnival

Silly shenanigans at the grammar swimming carnival

An overview

On Tuesday the 22nd of February 2022 (Commonly known as Twosday), the Grammar school held their annual swimming carnival, a day full of thrilling swimming races, recognition of swimming achievement, fun, and most importantly, house spirit. The weather on the day was most certainly not preferable, with rain pouring down on and off throughout the day, but that could not stop grammar students from 7-12 competing in as many races as possible with enthusiasm. Unfortunately, the grammar carnival was stopped just before lunch due to the cracking of thunder in the area, so it turned out that the weather could stop the carnival.

Despite the weather halting the carnival just before lunch, the day boasted some of the most outstanding swimming races. Events held on the day included: the 200m individual medley (50m of all four strokes), the 50m and 100m freestyle events, the 50m butterfly event, the 50m and 100m backstroke races, as well as the highly anticipated Year 12 races, which are always a highlight of the carnival.

Outside of the pool, the environment was filled with house spirit, enthusiasm, and a general air of comradery (if I’m allowed to use that word anymore). This was shown through the house colours being worn with pride in the stands (As shown in the bottom-right image), friendly competition brewing in the stands, good vibes among grammar cohorts, and a nice air of positivity from all the attendees.

Unfortunately, due to the current COVID climate in the school, the carnival was nomination-only, however many swimmers nominated to attend, making for a great, cheerful atmosphere on the day (see side information for more details.

Well done to everyone who nominated themselves for the carnival and got in the house spirit!

Due the early cancellation of the carnival due to the weather, the 50m breastroke event had to be postponed until the lunch of Thursday 24th of February. Aside from this, there was one notable event cancellation, the annual bellyflop competition, a cancellation that brought a tear to many-an-eye. We can only hope the cancellation of this year’s bellyflop competition will only mean a triumphant return for 2023.
